Fliss teaches saxophone and clarinet to all age groups and is happy to follow both ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall syllabuses (Jazz or Classical) from Grade 1 to diploma level. She is equally happy to teach without working towards grades.

Fliss has taught music across Islington since 2011 and currently enjoys working at Guildhall Young Artists. For Music First she composed and arranged various ensemble works including a piece for children's orchestra which she conducted on stage at Barbican in 2017 (pictured above). In 2018 she composed & arranged 'The Southampton Suite' for rhythm section and 1000s of recorders for a massed schools project in Southampton culminating in a performance at Central Hall, Southampton. In 2021 she composed, produced and mixed 'Seasons Change' a charity single released by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama featuring 70 Islington school children completed in lockdown.

Testimonials

'Fliss Gorst brings sunshine and rainbows regardless if it’s pouring with rain. I have been privileged to have her teach me the clarinet. I was a total beginner and at 56, she showed patience, care and encouragement. I’ve always wanted to learn an instrument but the busyness of life took over. Fliss gave me music to learn that was fun and inspiring. I look up the musicians she recommends and try and play alongside. Music brings a smile to my face along with Fliss’ can do

attitude. She gently urges you on through the squeaks, being positive until you’ve conquered that tricky note. I can’t recommend Fliss enough.'

'Fliss is not only an amazing musician she is also a fantastic teacher. She is incredibly positive and her enthusiasm keeps students motivated to practice and keep learning.

Our son met Fliss in Y5 at primary school learning the clarinet in a group but swapped to private saxophone lessons when he moved to secondary school. Fliss was very patient, reliable and collaborative; she encouraged him to play in bands at school even though he was unsure at first. Whilst technical skills were important, she inspired him to choose what he wanted to play.

Nurtured by Fliss, he developed his own interest in jazz, and together they decided to take the Trinity Guildhall music exams, achieving grade 8 in Y12.  Most importantly, Luke has developed his own enjoyment in playing and listening to music which I'm sure will give him lifelong pleasure. Fliss goes the extra mile for her students.  I can't recommend her more highly.'

Siobhan, Parent

'Fliss is an outstanding teacher. She taught my daughter saxophone for  two years and helped her gain a grade 8 distinction. She is supportive, and suggested other orchestras and extra curricular opportunities, for my daughter to gain more performance experience. She is child friendly and communicates well with parents about musical options and goes above and beyond her job description. I believe that Fliss is the reason that my daughter excelled in playing saxophone and managed to audition and get into Junior Guildhall. As a professional musician, Fliss understands the rigours of the music industry and is able to offer guidance based on her lived experience.  She shares her passion for music,  so much so, that my daughter is now doing Music A level and wants to go to a Conservatoire after sixth form.'
